Why some relationships never reach marriage

Love, karma and the grahas

I have seen relationships where everything seemed settled. The families had spoken, marriage had been discussed, and the couple had already imagined their life together. Yet, when it came to taking the final step, something kept going wrong. One person would hesitate, a new disagreement would surface, or circumstances would suddenly change.

What makes these situations painful is that the love may be genuine. The problem is that loving someone and being ready to marry them are two different things.

In Vedic astrology, I look at the fifth house for romance and the seventh house for marriage. The relationship between these houses, their lords, Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani) and the Navamsa can reveal important themes around commitment.

When love is strong but commitment is weak

The fifth house speaks of attraction and romance. The seventh brings responsibility, partnership and the decision to build a life together.

Astrological factorWhat I examine
Fifth houseRomance and emotional attachment
Seventh house and its lordMarriage and commitment
Venus (Shukra)Attraction, affection and harmony
Saturn (Shani)Delay, responsibility and hesitation
Rahu and KetuIntense attachment, uncertainty or detachment
Navamsa (D9)Marriage-related planetary patterns

Saturn’s influence on the seventh house or Venus may bring delays or make commitment feel like a heavy responsibility. Rahu can symbolise intense attraction, while Ketu may reflect detachment in certain combinations. None of these placements alone means marriage will fail.

The relationship that keeps getting postponed

Imagine a woman who has been with someone for four years. Every time she asks about marriage, there is a new reason to wait. First, it is his career. Then his family. Then finances. Each explanation sounds reasonable on its own, but the years keep passing.

This is where I believe an astrological reading must look beyond romantic compatibility. The seventh house, its lord, the Navamsa and the running dasha all deserve attention. The question is not simply whether two people are attracted to each other, but whether the chart supports the broader themes of commitment and whether both individuals are actually choosing that future.

A birth chart cannot tell us with certainty what another person will decide. Their actions matter, too.

Is every unfinished relationship karmic?

We often call a relationship karmic when it is difficult to leave. But not every intense bond is meant to become a marriage.

Sometimes a relationship teaches us what we need from a partner. Sometimes it reveals the difference between promises and action. And sometimes two people love each other but want entirely different lives.

In Jyotisha, the fifth and seventh houses offer different perspectives on romance and marriage. Saturn, Venus, Rahu, Ketu and the Navamsa add further layers to the interpretation.

My approach is to examine these patterns without encouraging someone to wait endlessly for a promised future.

Love may bring two people together. Marriage requires both to take the next step.
