Love, karma and the grahas: planetary combinations behind emotional distance, broken promises and sudden endings.
Why do relationships end? Explore breakup astrology through Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, the seventh house and Navamsa to understand separation, emotional distance and relationship karma.
One of the questions I encounter in relationship readings is, “If they loved me, why did they leave?”
Often, the person asking has replayed the relationship countless times. They remember the marriage promises, the conversations about the future and the little things that made them feel secure. What they cannot understand is how someone who once wanted a life with them could eventually walk away.
When I examine such charts, I look beyond Venus or the seventh house alone. I assess the fifth house of romance, the seventh house of partnership, the second house of family continuity, the eighth house of upheaval and the twelfth house of withdrawal. The condition of their lords, planetary afflictions, Navamsa and running dashas all contribute to the picture.
Over time, certain patterns become particularly interesting to examine. Here are some of the combinations I consider when investigating the astrological themes associated with separation.
1. When the relationship was intense but could not last
Some relationships begin with extraordinary attraction. The couple becomes inseparable, makes plans quickly and feels certain that they have found their person. Yet the same relationship eventually becomes unstable.
Rahu, Venus and the fifth house deserve attention in these cases, particularly when the seventh house tells a different story from the romantic indicators.
| Combination to examine | Traditional interpretation |
|---|---|
| Rahu conjunct Venus | Intense attraction, fascination or unconventional relationship dynamics |
| Rahu in the fifth house or influencing its lord | Heightened romantic preoccupation or unusual circumstances in love |
| Fifth lord connected with Rahu | Strong desires or complicated romantic experiences |
| Fifth lord in the eighth house, especially when afflicted | Romantic upheaval, crisis or transformation |
| Fifth lord in the twelfth house | Distance, withdrawal or circumstances that cause romance to recede |
| Strong fifth-house indicators alongside a severely afflicted seventh lord | Romance may be more prominent than stable partnership in the overall chart |
What I look for: Is the attraction supported by the promise of lasting partnership, or are the romantic indicators considerably stronger than the marriage indicators?
Rahu does not automatically destroy relationships, and the fifth lord in the eighth or twelfth does not guarantee a breakup. These placements require assessment alongside benefic influences and the complete chart.
2. When someone keeps postponing marriage
This pattern is familiar: the relationship continues, but marriage is always a little further away. First, there is a career concern. Then a family problem. Later, financial stability becomes the reason to wait.
Saturn (Shani), the seventh lord and the Navamsa are especially relevant when examining delays and hesitation around commitment.
| Combination to examine | Traditional interpretation |
|---|---|
| Saturn conjunct or aspecting the seventh lord | Delay, caution, responsibility or a serious approach to commitment |
| Saturn influencing Venus | Restraint, emotional reserve or delayed relationship development |
| Saturn in the seventh house | Seriousness, caution or delays, depending on strength and lordship |
| Seventh lord in the sixth, eighth or twelfth house | Partnership challenges requiring closer assessment |
| Seventh lord debilitated or severely afflicted | Possible vulnerability in marriage-related themes |
| Repeated affliction to the seventh house and its lord in D1 and D9 | A stronger reason to investigate persistent partnership difficulties |
What I look for: Is Saturn delaying commitment while the relationship matures, or are several factors repeatedly challenging the capacity to sustain a partnership?
Saturn can also produce loyalty and endurance. Its influence alone cannot establish that someone will refuse marriage.
3. When one person withdraws emotionally
Sometimes the breakup appears sudden to one partner, while the other has been withdrawing for months. Affection diminishes, conversations become difficult and future plans gradually disappear.
The Moon, Venus, seventh lord and twelfth house are among the factors I would examine.
| Combination to examine | Traditional interpretation |
|---|---|
| Moon afflicted by Rahu | Emotional preoccupation, uncertainty or heightened sensitivity |
| Moon conjunct Ketu | Inwardness, detachment or difficulty expressing emotional needs |
| Venus conjunct Ketu | Detachment or changing experiences of affection |
| Seventh lord connected with the twelfth house or its lord | Distance, withdrawal or separation-related circumstances |
| Venus or seventh lord severely afflicted in both D1 and D9 | Relationship difficulties warranting closer examination |
| Saturn influencing the Moon or Venus | Emotional restraint, reserve or a sense of heaviness |
What I look for: Do the combinations suggest a recurring theme of emotional distance, and is that theme activated during the relevant dasha?
These placements cannot reveal exactly what a partner was thinking. The chart must be read alongside the relationship’s actual history.
4. When breakups and reconciliations keep repeating
Some couples separate, reconcile, promise to change and return to precisely the same argument. Their attachment remains strong, but the underlying problems never seem to disappear.
Here, I would investigate Rahu-Ketu influences, the fifth and seventh houses, and connections between relationship lords and the sixth or eighth houses.
| Combination to examine | Traditional interpretation |
|---|---|
| Rahu influencing Venus or the fifth lord | Intense attraction or recurring romantic preoccupation |
| Ketu influencing Venus or the seventh lord | Detachment or changing commitment patterns |
| Fifth lord connected with the eighth house | Romantic crises or significant relationship transformations |
| Sixth lord connected with the fifth or seventh lord | Conflict, disagreement or adversarial dynamics |
| Strong nodal involvement with both romance and partnership indicators | Unusual, complicated or unstable relationship themes |
| Difficult relationship combinations activated repeatedly by relevant dashas | Periods when recurring relationship issues may become prominent |
What I look for: Is the relationship repeatedly passing through periods of attraction, conflict and withdrawal? Are the same planets activated during each major turning point?
Repeated breakups cannot be established from Rahu or Ketu alone. Timing, the full chart and the circumstances of each separation must be considered.
5. When practical circumstances destroy the relationship
Not every separation begins with a loss of love. Sometimes the couple cannot agree on where to live, whether to marry, how to handle their families or who should make a sacrifice.
The sixth, seventh, second, eighth and twelfth houses may all become relevant, depending on the circumstances.
| Combination to examine | Traditional interpretation |
|---|---|
| Sixth lord connected with the seventh lord | Conflict, disputes or competing interests within partnership |
| Sixth lord influencing Venus | Relationship tension or disagreements affecting harmony |
| Seventh lord connected with the twelfth house | Distance, relocation, withdrawal or separation-related circumstances |
| Second lord afflicted alongside the seventh lord | Possible strain involving family continuity or shared responsibilities |
| Fourth-house or fourth-lord affliction connected with the seventh house | Domestic circumstances or home-related concerns affecting partnership |
| Mars or Saturn afflicting the seventh house and its lord | Conflict, pressure or prolonged difficulties, depending on the full chart |
What I look for: Are the difficulties rooted in the relationship itself, or are family, domestic, financial and geographical circumstances placing pressure on the partnership?
The sixth lord’s connection with the seventh house can also manifest as the couple working through disagreements and resolving them successfully. It is not a standalone divorce combination.
6. When the breakup seems sudden
A partner may leave after a period of apparent normality. The decision seems abrupt, and the person left behind struggles to understand what changed.
In such cases, I examine the natal relationship indicators alongside the relevant dasha and transit triggers.
| Combination to examine | Traditional interpretation |
|---|---|
| Rahu influencing the seventh lord | Unusual circumstances or significant changes involving partnership |
| Eighth lord connected with Venus or the seventh lord | Relationship crises or major transformations |
| Eighth-house affliction involving the fifth or seventh lord | Disruptive developments in romance or partnership themes |
| Twelfth lord connected with the seventh lord | Withdrawal, distance or separation-related circumstances |
| Dasha or antardasha of an afflicted seventh lord, Venus or relevant house lord | A period when existing relationship themes may become more prominent |
| Multiple natal afflictions activated together by relevant dashas | A stronger basis for examining the timing of a relationship turning point |
What I look for: Was the separation preceded by a difficult natal pattern, and did the relevant planetary periods activate that pattern at the time?
A transit or dasha cannot establish that a breakup will occur on a particular date. It is interpreted in relation to the natal chart and the real circumstances.
7. When secrecy or a third person is suspected
After a breakup, one of the first questions people ask is whether someone else was involved.
In Vedic astrology, Rahu, Venus, Mercury, the fifth and seventh houses, and the eighth house may be considered when exploring complicated romantic circumstances. Their meanings vary considerably according to placement, lordship and planetary strength.
| Combination to examine | Traditional interpretation |
|---|---|
| Rahu influencing Venus | Intense desire or unconventional relationship dynamics |
| Fifth lord connected with Rahu and the seventh house | Complicated romantic circumstances involving partnership |
| Fifth and seventh lords connected with the eighth house | Hidden matters or significant relationship changes may warrant examination |
| Mercury afflicted in connection with relevant relationship houses | Communication difficulties, ambiguity or disputes |
| Venus and the seventh lord severely afflicted across D1 and D9 | A reason to investigate wider relationship difficulties |
These combinations cannot prove infidelity, identify a third person or establish deception. A chart is not evidence of another person’s private actions.
8. Why the Navamsa and dashas matter
I do not consider the birth chart complete for marriage analysis without examining the Navamsa (D9). I assess the seventh house and its lord, Venus, planetary strength and the connections between D1 and D9.
I then examine the Vimshottari Mahadasha and Antardasha to understand when particular natal themes may become prominent.
| Factor | What I examine |
|---|---|
| D1 seventh house and lord | The overall condition of partnership indicators |
| D9 seventh house and lord | Additional marriage-related context |
| Venus in D1 and D9 | Relationship significations and planetary strength |
| Fifth and seventh lords | The relationship between romance and commitment |
| Sixth, eighth and twelfth lords | Possible conflict, upheaval or withdrawal themes |
| Relevant Mahadasha and Antardasha | Timing in relation to the natal promise |
A difficult D9 placement alone does not establish separation. Nor does a difficult dasha automatically end a relationship. I look for repetition of the same theme across the chart, supported by timing and the circumstances of the relationship.
The pattern matters more than a single placement
When someone comes to me asking why a partner walked away, I do not look for one planet to blame. I examine whether the chart repeatedly points towards the same theme: intense attraction without commitment, prolonged delay, emotional withdrawal, repeated conflict or a major change in circumstances.
The strongest interpretation comes from the combined picture of the fifth and seventh houses, their lords, Venus, the Navamsa and the relevant dashas. Even then, astrology offers a traditional interpretive framework rather than proof of another person’s motives.
Sometimes a chart may describe relationship strain, while the lived story reveals the reason the relationship finally ended: one person wanted marriage and the other did not; family expectations became unbearable; or the same conflict continued without resolution.
For me, the purpose of relationship astrology is to help people understand the patterns they have experienced, not to keep them waiting for someone who has already chosen to leave.
Love can be profound. Attachment can be difficult to break. But a lasting partnership also requires willingness, consistency and shared decisions.
